Derde AI-symposium
Harmful Policing Symposium
10 November 2026 | Erasmus University Rotterdam
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Following the success of two AI-symposiums, Dutch Surveillance Studies is organizing a third symposium: ‘Harmful Policing’. We are delighted to invite submissions exploring the increased digitization of policing and new forms of harm. By focusing on the relationships between physical and digital policing practices, this symposium elucidates the interplay between technology, policing and harm. Scholars, activists, experts by experience and practitioners are welcome to apply.
The symposium is a prelude to an international exhibition on building public truths and fatal police violence in het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, opening in 2027. We welcome abstracts addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:
- New definitions of police violence (legal/sociological/criminological);
- Reflections on how digitization influences the employment of physical force;
- The mental, social and democratic consequences of harmful policing;
- Disproportionate policing practices as a result of racial profiling, risk profiling and use of force;
- Accountability and oversight in digital policing (transparency, audits, bodycams, governance);
- Effects of digital policing such as loss of privacy, chilling effects, social sorting, etc.
